A key part of debate (regardless of a format’s specifications) is research skills, active listening, the ability to think on one’s feet, and confidently illustrate your arguments to the “judge” for minutes on end. Not only are these some keys to success in debate, but also in life, making the skills learned, sharpened, and exercised in debate universal attributes to possess. By teaching the fundamentals of note taking both prior to and during the debate, practicing through “mock” debate rounds, honing one’s persuasive and public speaking skills, and even discussing the importance of body language, volume, and vocal tone, not only will you have the tools necessary to thrive in debate, but the classroom, workplace, and advocating for yourself and your wants as well.
